November 2011

Celebrate American Indian Heritage Month
Saturday, November 5
11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

American Indian leaders, traditions, and arts are commemorated on US Postage stamps.
Learn about American Indians on postage stamps, make a topical collection, and enjoy
storytime with a book about Sequoyah, the Cherokee man who gave his people written language.

Civil War Family Day
Saturday, November 19
11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Sort mail in a Railway Post Office train car (a Civil War-era innovation), learn about
Confederate postage, find out how Abraham Lincoln corresponded, and write to current
military personnel.

Author Talk: Your Brother in Arms
1 p.m. - 2 p.m.

George P. McClelland was a common soldier in the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, but he performed
an uncommon service. He witnessed some of the war's most pivotal battles in his years in the
Union Army and left behind over 40 family letters that give readers the opportunity to see the war
from his prospective. Robert Plumb, author of Your Brother in Arms, explores McClelland's wartime
experiences. A book signing follows.

Explore Mail Call
Meet the Curator: 2 p.m. - 2:30 p.m., Curator-led Tour: 2:30 p.m.

Meet Lynn Heidelbaugh, curator of Mail Call, and explore objects related to wartime mail.
At 2:30 p.m., take a curator-led spotlight tour of the exhibit. The newly opened Mail Call exhibit
explores how mail has provided military personnel with a vital communication link to their communities
fro 1775 to 2010.
